Pelvic floor physical therapy is a minimally invasive treatment with proven results. It is a primary method for treating pelvic floor dysfunction, including pelvic organ prolapse, urinary or fecal incontinence and urgency, pelvic pain, and painful intercourse. When the pelvic floor muscles have normal strength and tone, the pelvic organs are supported and can control and prevent dysfunction.
“Pelvic floor muscles are just like other muscles in the body. They play a role in the kinetic chain and affect total body function.”
Stefanie Davis, PT, DPT, PCES
PREGNANCY & POSTPARTUM CORRECTIVE EXERCISE: Following childbirth, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) now emphasizes the importance of 4th-trimester care that extends past the last postpartum OB visit and includes a referral to a Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist to optimize physical recovery.
PROCESS: Our patients, receiving treatment for any condition, including pelvic floor disorders, begin with a thorough evaluation. Our therapists start by getting to know you and better understand your symptoms, reproductive history, activities, difficulties, and goals. You will receive a full-body evaluation to determine movement patterns, posture, core strength, and more to help direct your personalized plan of care. If our certified therapist determines that an internal pelvic floor muscle assessment would benefit your care, she will explain the process and will only proceed with the assessment if you feel comfortable doing so. We take steps to ensure your privacy and comfort throughout the entire evaluation.
METHODOLOGY: From reconnecting breath with muscle activation/relaxation and functional exercise activities to manual therapy, electrical stimulation, tactile biofeedback, and more – a comprehensive plan of care is formed and you are on the road to healing, reaching your goals, and remain comfortable in the process.
